Functions and Members


The Dental Council of Hong Kong

The Dental Council of Hong Kong (“the Dental Council”) is established under the Dentists Registration Ordinance, Cap. 156, Laws of Hong Kong. Its functions include registration of dentists (including specialist registration), disciplinary control of individual registered dentists and enrolment of dental hygienists in Hong Kong.

Composition

Under section 4 of the Dentists Registration Ordinance, the Dental Council shall consist of –

  1. the Registrar (the consultant dental surgeon in charge of the Dental Services of the Department of Health (DH));
  2. 1 consultant dental surgeon of the Dental Services of DH;
    1. 1 registered dentist, who is a full-time menber of the teaching staff of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), nominated by HKU;
  3. 1 registered dentist nominated by the Board of Governors of The Prince Philip Dental Hospital;
  4. 1 registered specialist dentist nominated by the Council of the Academy of Medicine;
  5. 2 registered dentists nominated by the Council of the Hong Kong Dental Association (HKDA);
  6. 1 registered dentist, who satisfies the condition specified in section 4(3) of the Ordinance, nominated by the Council of HKDA;
  7. 3 persons with full registration whose names are contained in the practising list from a list of not less than 9 such persons elected in an election held in accordance with the Dentists Election Regulation;
  8. 4 registered dentists;
  9. 2 registered medical practitioners;
  10. 2 lay persons from a list of not less than 6 lay persons elected in an election held in accordance with the Organization Representatives Election Regulation; and
  11. 5 lay persons.

Members in (b) to (k) above are all appointed by Chief Executive.
