Health Committee*
The Health Committee* (“HC”) is set up under section 5AC of the Dentists Registration Ordinance. According to section 5O of the Ordinance, the HC may perform the following functions –
- to conduct a hearing on any matter concerning the health of a registrant or the physical or mental fitness of a registrant to practise dentistry;
- to make a recommendation to the Dental Council, after a hearing conducted under paragraph (a) that the name of the registrant be removed from the General Register or Register of Dental Care Professionals permanently or with a right to apply for restoration under section 27A of the Ordinance after the expiry of a period;
- if a name is removed under paragraph (b) with a right to apply for restoration under section 27A of the Ordinance after the expiry of a period, to recommend—
- the duration of the period, which must not exceed 12 months; and
- the extension of the period mentioned in subparagraph (i) or as extended under this subparagraph for a period not exceeding 12 months; and
- to recommend, where appropriate, that the removal of a name under paragraph (b) above be suspended subject to the condition (if any) recommended by the HC.
Composition
According to section 5N of the Ordinance, the HC shall consist of the following members appointed by the Dental Council –
- 3 members of the Dental Council who are registered dentists (one of them shall be the chairperson);
- 1 registered specialist dentist nominated by the Council of the Academy of Medicine;
- 1 registered dentist, who is a public officer, nominated by the Director of Health;
- 1 registered dentist nominated by the Council of the Hong Kong Dental Association;
- 1 to 3 persons, who are not members of the Dental Council, whom the Dental Council considers appropriate (at least one of them must be a registered medical practitioner); and
- 2 members of the Dental Council who are lay persons.
