Registration Requirements

Provisional Registration (Part 2 of the General Register)

According to section 7E of Dentists Registration Ordinance, a person may apply for provisional registration if he / she –

  1. has been awarded a bachelor degree in dentistry awarded by a university in Hong Kong specified in Schedule 1 of the Ordinance; and has been engaged to work under full-time employment as a dentist in a Schedule 6 institution for the purpose of completing an internship mentioned in section 8A of the Ordinance; or
  2. has passed the Licensing Examination and has been engaged to work under full-time employment as a dentist in a Schedule 7 institution for the purpose of completing a period of assessment mentioned in section 8B of the Ordinance.

The Dental Council may reject the application if it is satisfied, after due inquiry, that the applicant –

  1. has been convicted in Hong Kong or elsewhere of an offence punishable with imprisonment;
  2. has been found guilty in Hong Kong or elsewhere of unprofessional conduct; or
  3. is not of good character.

Note: (1) The University of Hong Kong is specified in Schedule 1 of the Ordinance.
(2) Schedule 6 and 7 institutions both include Department of Health and Hospital Authority.

According to section 7G of the Ordinance, a person with provisional registration is to be treated as a registered dentist while undertaking any work that the person is required to undertake for the purpose of completing the internship/period of assessment or any other purpose as may be directed by the Chief Executive in Council.
